Harrison sponsors vital kit for Culinary Medicine Initiative
- Responsibility
Harrison Catering is delighted to sponsor knives and aprons for the inaugural Culinary Medicine programme, a course accredited by the Royal College of General Practitioners. The innovative programme teaches medical students the foundations of nutrition and how to cook healthier food from scratch so that they can pass on this knowledge to benefit patients.
Having originated in the USA, Culinary Medicine is licenced by the Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans and was pioneered by Professor Tim Harlan, Associate Dean of the medical school. Dr Rupy Aujla, an NHS doctor, is spearheading the programme over here and Westminster Kingsway College is the first centre in the UK.
Medical students learn of the impact that dietary habits can have on health and the programme plays an integral part in creating dialogue between the doctor and their patient. Techniques and recipes are taught to the medics so they can empower patients to make better dietary decisions. Changing dietary habits can help to manage or even prevent some illnesses and diseases, resulting in better outcomes.Claire Aylward, Joint Managing Director said
“We are very pleased to support this initiative as there are many synergies between Harrison and Culinary Medicine. Their forward thinking approach aligns well with our ethos which has always been to create quality fresh food and instil a love of cooking to impact on wellbeing. Blending the art of food and cooking with the science of medicine is an interesting concept and we are very happy to support Culinary Medicine.”
